UNDERGRADUATE TUITION FEES, BURSARIES & SCHOLARSHIPS - 2015 ENTRY

There are a lot of things to consider when deciding to study for a degree – what subject, which university and how much it will cost. At Surrey, we understand what a big undertaking this is. We also understand how important it is that we do everything we can to help you. That’s why our focus is on providing the best support package that we can and making it accessible to as many students as possible.

THE INFORMATION ON THIS PAGE IS AIMED AT STUDENTS COMMENCING THEIR STUDIES IN 2015. FOR DETAILS OF OUR TUITION FEES, BURSARIES AND SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2014, VISIT OUR FEES AND FUNDING 2014 PAGE.

OUR TUITION FEES

Your degree is an investment in your future career. Tuition fees for UK/EU students on our undergraduate degree programmes are currently set at £9,000 per year, so that we can continue to deliver a wonderful education and a degree that is rated by your future employers.
UK/EU students on our NHS-funded programmes, such as Nursing, Midwifery, Operating Department Practice and Paramedic Practice, do not have to pay any tuition fees.

Fees during your Professional Training placement year

The majority of our students have the opportunity to take part in our Professional Training placement programme, in which case a Surrey degree will normally last four years. A reduced fee is payable (details to follow).
Most students on our Professional Training placement programme are paid a salary by their employers, which is a valuable source of income during their time at Surrey. For those who are on an unpaid placement, we have a fund to ensure that they receive some financial support during their placement year.

Number crunching

To get a true picture of what university will cost you, it is important to make sure you have included everything in your calculations – even the subtractions!
When you are looking at the total amount it may cost you to come to university, there are some facts which should help you get things straight in your own mind.

Don’t pay fees up front

It is estimated that this is the least cost-effective way of paying for tuition. Instead, consider a loan.
They work like this:
  • The government loans you the money to pay your tuition fees
  • You pay the government back, in instalments, after you graduate
  • Your repayments are in proportion to your income
  • You only start repaying when you earn over a certain amount (£21,000pa at time of writing)
  • Repayment rates are decided in advance, so there shouldn’t be any unexpected changes
Don’t just take our word for it. In this video, watch Martin Lewis, Head of the Independent Taskforce on Student Finance Information, explain why everyone can afford to go to university.

SUPPORT FROM THE GOVERNMENT

For many people, the real cost of going to university is reduced through financial support from the government.

Maintenance Loan

This helps with living costs and is paid into your bank account each term.
Here are a few facts to help you understand Maintenance Loans:
  • Only full-time students can apply for a Maintenance Loan
  • The exact amount that you can borrow depends on your family’s income, where you live, where you study, what year of study you’re in, and what help you get through the Maintenance Grant
  • Rates for final-year students are different Maintenance Grant for living costs
  • Only full-time students can apply for a Maintenance Grant to help with living costs. These are available to students with a household income of £42,611 or less. Your household income is your parents’ or partner’s income and your own
  • If you get a Maintenance Grant, your Maintenance Loan will be reduced

Special Support Grant

This is for students who qualify for income support or housing benefit.
You may be eligible for the Special Support Grant if:
  • You’re a single parent
  • Your partner is also a student
  • You have certain disabilities
For full details and qualifying criteria, please visit: gov.uk/student-finance

Bursaries and scholarships

We encourage applications from everyone with the ability to study for a Surrey degree, and understand that finance is a factor that can affect decisions.  We are committed to making sure that we offer support for students who might need it.

Surrey Bursaries

In order to be eligible for a Surrey Bursary your household income must meet all of the criteria, you must be a UK or EU student and must be paying the full tuition fees (therefore NHS-funded students and students who are being funded are not eligible).
You must also have correctly filled out and submitted your application to Student Finance England/Student Finance European Team for a loan and must also make sure that you and your parent/guardian have given your consent to share the information with the University.

* POLAR (Participation of Local Areas) is a HEFCE classification for the participation in higher education by young people by geographical area in the UK. It’s used to measure the widening participation performance of universities.
** Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI) is an index of deprivation used in England and measures in a local area the proportion of under 16s that live in low income households therefore this criteria is not applicable to students who are Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish who ordinarily reside in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Year 1
£1,800 accommodation discount for students living on campus (for those living off-campus the option of a £1,800 cash bursary is available instead).

Discounts for Surrey Graduates

If you are a self-funded UK, EU or international student who has studied for an undergraduate degree at the University of Surrey campus in Guildford, you will be eligible for a 10% discount on our taught postgraduate Masters programme fees, with effect from September 2013. This scheme is applicable to 2015 Postgraduate Taught entry students.
Students graduating in the summer of 2015 are eligible, as well as alumni from previous years, on receipt of evidence of the award from Surrey and where we can identify that you actually studied in Guildford. Students from SII DUFE are eligible for this scheme.
Associated Institution students are not eligible. Not available to modular self-pacing students.
This scheme will be reviewed annually.
For eligible students, one third of the full tuition fees due for 2015/16 will have to be paid in order to enrol on your programme, then the 10% discount (based on the full fee amount for 2015/16) is deducted from the second and third instalments. This means the tuition fee invoice, that will be emailed to your University email account in October, will reflect the actual balance due.

FCE(T) AKOKA

WE WHO ARE!!!

There was dire need to educate and produce technical teachers in Nigeria after the termination, in September 1967, of the Special Fund Project of the International Labour orgainisation (ILO) for the training of Technical/Vocational educators. This need was earlier highlighter in the Gailers’ Report of August 1964 titled "a National Plan for the Development of Technical Education in the Federal Republic of Nigeria".
The report emphasized that the establishment of a Technical Teacher Education institution was for effective manpower development of technology in Nigeria. Thus the Federal Government established the National Technical Teachers College (NTTC) Akoja, Yaba Lagos as the first Technical Teacher Education institution in the country to award Technical Teachers’ Certificate (TTC) for professionals in commercial and technical education.
In 1982, the name of the College was changed to FCE (T) Akoka due to the expansion in curricular and courses being offered. That is with inclusion of Nigeria Certificate in Education NCE (T) programmes, the College became a full-fledge autonomous academic institution in 1986 with the promulgation of the Federal College of Education Decree No 4 of 1986 and as amended in 1993. As inception, the College enjoyed the assistance of the United Nations Development programme (UNDP). The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) was appointed as the executing agency on behalf of UNDP while the Federal Ministry of Education was the co-operating agency on behalf of the Federal Government.

Consequently, the College was under the aegis of the Federal Ministry of Education, while assistance through UNESCO was in the form of tools, machinery and technical experts. The UNDP terminated its assistance and involvement in August 1974 retaining a skeleton staff of two (UNESCO) experts in craft techniques and electrical engineering who remaind till early 1980s to complete the transition.

When the College was founded in 1967, it was conceived as an institution to offer a one year teacher training course for candidates possessing recognized technical and commercial qualifications with appropriate work experience, who wish to become subject teachers in technical, vocational and commercial academic areas.

The NCE (Technical Education) and programmes wire established in 1968 and 1970 respectively, to train secondary school leavers to become teachers of technical/commercial subjects. The College moved to its permanent site, along St. Finbarr’s College Road, Akoka in September 1975, after eight years of temporary sojourn at the campuses of Yaba College of Technology and Yaba Trade Centre. It now occupies a land area of about fifteen acres in the neighborhood of Akoka with all levels of educational institutions (primary, secondary and tertiary) and well known. Later on, NCE Vocational and Science education programmmes were included in 1992 and 1999 respectively.

The conglomeration of these courses in Science, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (which in conformity with Section 7 of the National Policy on Education) makes this institution a complete and specialized College in the disciplines that should be most appropriately upgraded to degree awarding institution like a University of Agriculture and Technology.
The physical facilities on ground include an Administrative Blocks, Classrooms Block together with a three-story Classroom Complex and Lecture Theatre.
There are workshop facilities for Electrical/Electronic Technology, Auto-mechanics, Metalwork, Woodwork, Fine and Applied Arts, Computer, Home Economics, Agricultural Science, Building Construction and Business Education. There is also a Centre for Education Technology (CET) with facilities for close circuit television. The current level of workshop facilities and other essential physical structure will contribute to the quality assurance and production of high competent graduate teachers of Science, Technical and Vocational education and training.

Six halls of residence are in place for students accommodation. There is a hostel complex under construction. There is also an ongoing radical expansion of facilities and infrastructure especially from the contributions of ETF, Federal Government Intervention and Africa Development Programmes in the College.

The philosophy of the Federal College of Education (Technical) Akoka, as reflected on the logo of the College is "Knowledge, Skill and Service". The implication of this is that education in the College is together and at once functional, qualitative and sensitive to national requirements. Thus, students are trained to have a thorough mastery of both theoretical and the practical aspects of their major teaching subjects. Apart from laboratory and workshop practices, students are exposed to sixteen weeks experience in industrial settings. Furthermore the College has always support curriculum reviews to produce the type of technical teachers that may be needed for the economy, from time to time.

The philosophy has been fulfilled by the College creditability to National and International acclamation about forty-three years. It therefore deserves an upliftment to greater challenges to degree awarding institution as mark of further recognition.
